Why join the IUG? Who solves Internet problems? Internet Service Providers
(ISPs)? Committees? Anyone but us? As consumers, we avoid responsibility
for what we consume. The IUG puts the ball in our court.
We, collectively, safeguard the collective (our) interest.
Does this mean electronic democracy? Hopefully. We need
the capacity to discuss issues and vote on line.
What if I don't want electronic democracy? Do you fear the tyranny
of the majority? A reasonable concern. Majorities have done terrible things, but arguments
against electronic democracy repeat the 1776 arguments Tories used to oppose
representative democracy. The despised mass can't handle it. Hopefully electronic
democracy will prove as beneficial to the body politic as representative democracy
did in its day. It is the only alternative to the way things are.
Do I have time to get involved? Your call. We are unaccustomed to
participating in collective decision making. We assume, despite mountains of evidence
to the contrary, representatives have our interests at heart.
